ZTE, the Chinese telecom equipment maker has been dragged in a bribery scandal.

According to a report by NBC News, the Chinese telecoms company is the subject of a new bribery investigation by the U.S. Justice Department.

The NBC report said the U.S. Justice Department was investigating whether ZTE paid foreign officials to gain advantages in its global operations.

ZTE said in response to the report that it has not yet received notices from the US but that it is fully committed to meeting its legal and compliance obligations.

ZTE has previously pleaded guilty to violating U.S. sanctions against Iran and North Korea. An investigation three years ago found the company had conspired to evade U.S. embargoes by buying U.S. components, incorporating them into ZTE equipment and illegally shipping them to Iran.

MTN Uganda has unveiled a new offer that will allow Ugandans to send Mobile Money up to 30,000/-, at no cost for the next 30 days in a move to minimize the physical exchange of paper money. The offer is meant to reduce the risk of transmission of covid-19 that has paralysed daily life across the world.

Alongside this offer, the company has also launched a data bundle that will enable customers to work from home. Dubbed ‘Work from home’, the data bundle is meant to promote the concept of ‘social distancing’ while reducing the anticipated negative impact that limited movement and contact between people, may have on both the economic and social fabric of our society.

The ‘work from home’ data bundle can be accessed through Mobile Money by dialing *150*19# or through the MyMTN app.

“This is an extraordinary time, a time when as MTN we need to stand up and be counted on to do the right thing,” said Wim Vanhelleputte, the MTN Uganda CEO.

“Although the country has no confirmed case of covid-19, it is better for us to take precautionary measures. Government has already taken several steps in protecting her people and we feel that it is proper for us to complement government efforts in this monumental effort to tackle the threat posed by this disease,” Wim further commented.

MTN has also made Ushs 500 million available, with immediate effect, and offered the Ministry of Health free media channel space on radio, tv, social media, SMS plus its call centre IVR platform to promote prevention messages spearheaded by the Ministry of Health.
