With just Zambia the only team left standing in the Cubs way to the CAF youth championships that are set for January 2015 in Niger, Cubs skipper Charles Sebutinde has promised his commitment to see the young lads through. The Uganda Cubs have enjoyed a spectacular wind of form during the first two qualification stages where they beat Seychelles and our beloved neighbours Rwanda scoring 12 goals in four outings.
The U-17 striker Sebutinde said, “we said we work as a team”. Unlike his father and who is currently the head coach of the Cubs, Matia Lule, who played as sweeper during his hey days, Sebutinde has marked his name on the national junior team by scoring goals.
Sebutinde, a student at St Edwards Bukumi has promised to score more goals if selected to be a part of the team that will be playing Zambia in the third and final round of the qualification stage of the campaign. The young skipper netted against Seychelles in both legs and Rwanda in Gisenyi.
“I score goals because this is what I can do better when I am on the pitch. And I thank God for that opportunity,” said Sebutinde after a rigorous evening training session on Wednesday at FUFA technical Centre in Njeru.
“Zambia is a good side but we have character as a team to challenge our opponents. We have faith and belief that we can overcome them and also have the ability to compete at the highest level of the campaign” Sebutinde added.
He further stressed that “the pressure isn’t on us but on our opponents who are well aware of our capabilities in the game but we shall do our best to see that we finish up this game in Zambia to avoid tension when they come here at home.”
The Uganda Cubs will have some trial and build up games to determine the fitness level of the players before setting off to Zambia for the first leg on 13th September, 2014 at Nkoroma Stadium, Lusaka. Almost all the boys are in the camp apart from the team captain Andrew Okiring who is in the US for studies but is expected to join the rest of the team next week.
