Two time league winners, Vipers Sports Club failed on their last attempt to try and defend the Azam Uganda Premier League (AUPL) title as they shared the spoils with Uganda Revenue Authority FC in a one-all draw on Tuesday evening at Buikwe Stadium.
The game however turned into a top scorers’ affair as URA striker Robert Ssentongo netted a 16th minute goal to extend his personal tally to 16 goals, giving his side a lead in the process. Ten minutes later, his number one competitor Erisa Sekisambu levelled matters for the hosts as he raised his tally to 15 goals.
The stalemate implied that Vipers’ title hopes were over as they remained in second place with 52 points, four behind the now league champions KCCA (drew 1-1 with Express FC) with just a single game left to end the season.
Meanwhile, Kefa Kisala’s Tax Collectors remained in 6th place with 44 points.
Elsewhere, Lweza Football Club condemned Sports Club Victoria University (SC VU) to a 2-1 defeat to ensure safety of staying the topflight. Hassan Kikooyo fired the Kajjansi boys into the lead after 26 minutes while Alishe Asuman levelled matters for hosts four minutes to halftime.
Two minutes into the second half, Ndawula Moses restored the lead for the visitors which eventually turned out to be the match winner.
The much needed victory put Lweza on 34 points without a change in position on the table (13th) while their opponents are just playing to finish their games as they have already been relegated to the FUFA Big League.
