Cranes’ Heritage Experiment Earns Early Passing Grade

A reshaped Uganda Cranes squad, built around a mix of home-grown talent and heritage players, beat DR Congo 2-0 in a friendly in Johannesburg, offering an early but encouraging signal as the team continues its build-up toward the Africa Cup of Nations.

The friendly, played on Saturday 3 October, was the first real test for a Cranes lineup that looked noticeably different from recent squads. Coaches and federation officials have leaned into a strategy of recruiting players with Ugandan heritage who were raised or developed abroad, and this match gave that approach its first competitive outing against a familiar regional rival.

A Different Look for the Cranes

For a national team that has often relied on a settled core of domestically based players, fielding a squad featuring heritage recruits represented a shift in identity as much as personnel. The result against DR Congo, a side Uganda has met regularly in recent years, gave early evidence that the blend of backgrounds can function on the pitch together.

The win follows closely on the heels of another narrow result against Libya, suggesting the technical staff are using this run of friendlies to stress-test different combinations before the stakes rise in Afcon qualification matches proper.

Sissako and Boateng Combine

Among the heritage additions, Abdoulaye Sissako and Kelvin Owusu Boateng stood out in the DR Congo win. Sissako set up Boateng for Uganda’s second goal, with Boateng scoring his first goal for the Cranes in the process.

FUFA president Moses Magogo defended the recruitment of such players, arguing that selection for the national team should simply reflect the best available talent rather than where a player was born or raised. That contribution from Sissako and Boateng gave his argument a concrete example to point to just as the policy faces public scrutiny.

Balancing Promise With Caution

Not every reaction to the heritage-player push has been uncritical. Commentary drawing on Malaysia’s experience with naturalised players has been used as a cautionary reference point, a reminder that simply holding a passport does not guarantee long-term success or squad cohesion.

Uganda’s football administrators appear aware of that risk, treating these friendlies as genuine auditions rather than guaranteed long-term fixes. The approach also arrives alongside broader conversations about depth across Uganda’s Afcon preparations, with coaches reportedly facing selection headaches in other departments of the squad as well.

What It Means Going Forward

A single friendly win does not settle the debate over how heavily Uganda should lean on heritage recruitment, but it does buy the strategy some early credibility. The next assignments against stronger continental opposition will test whether this version of the Cranes can sustain the form shown in Johannesburg.

For fans following the Cranes’ build-up toward the Africa Cup of Nations, interest in how matches are discussed and tracked more broadly, including through outlets that follow odds and squad changes, means readers curious about that side of the game can check the best betting sites listed on Bettingtop10 Uganda. Official competition details and qualification structures for the tournament are maintained by the Confederation of African Football, which oversees Afcon qualifying across the continent.

As preparations continue, Uganda’s selectors face the task of turning a promising audition into a settled, competitive squad capable of handling the pressure of a major tournament. The DR Congo result offers reassurance, but the real examination still lies ahead.
