Sports Club Victoria University (SCVU) beat DRC’s CS Don Bosco 1-0 at Namboole on Sunday but that was not enough as they crashed out of the Caf Confederations Cup 3-1 on aggregate.
Mathew Odong scored the game’s solitary strike deep in the second half but overall the game would have done with some sparkle.
The visitors knew they had their three goals from the first leg in the bag, so they were okay with locking Victoria out and try hitting on the break. But Victoria were just as harmless, both sides conspiring to produce nothing monumental in the first half.
Victoria did return from recess with some intent and with Denis Guma pushing up from the middle, Odong down the right and Muwadda Mawejje on the left, Simon Okwi did receive some service on the hour.
And that was the first open chance of the game, a Fred Agandu ball into the penalty box finding Okwi, who expertly controlled it but his supposed curler with his right foot only saw it go wide with Don Bosco goalkeeper Mike Kabeya beaten.
Sustained pressure by the hosts also saw skipper Martin Mpuuga’s header crash off the cross bar before the visitors cleared their lines. Savio Kabugo also had effort cleared off the line as Don Bosco defended with their lives.
But something had to give, Odong heading in Isaac Muleme’s cross from the left to give Victoria a 79th minute lead.
They needed two more goals without replay to force a penalty shootout. But the Congolese held on to win the two-legged affair 3-1 on aggregate and progress to the first round.
