Having failed to host the 2013 Orange Africa Cup of Nations due the wars that were still prevailing in the country, the North African based country has again pulled out of hosting the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. The withdrawal now implies that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is in search of a host nation for the 2017 AFCON finals. Libya announced that it won’t be in position to host the tournament due to security reasons. Libya was going to spend an estimated 302 million US dollars on the construction of stadiums and the provision other necessary facilities like training grounds.
The communication was announced by CAF on its official website following a meeting on 22nd August between Libyan Minister of Youth and Sports, the president of the Libyan Football Federation and CAF President Issa Hayatou.
“Secretary General of CAF, Hicham ElAmrani, dispatched a circular on 23rd August, 2014 to all 54 member associations informing them of the decision and opening bids for the hosting of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. The designation of the Host for this competition will be made according to the statutory provisions of CAF, especially in conformity with articles 27 to 47 of the Regulations Governing the Application of CAF Statutes.” Reads part of the statement on CAFOnline.com.
With a deadline already set for September 30th, CAF announced that nations that would want to host the tournament should submit their applications before that date. Only nations whose applications match the desired requirements and satisfy needed facilities besides government support in such a limited time will be given the opportunity to host the tournament, CAF further explained on the matter.
