Uganda’s super league champions and representatives at the Kagame cup in Rwanda, KCC FC are on the verge of qualifying for the quarter finals at this year’s tournament. The growing hope in the Kampala Capital City Authority camp follows their 1-0 narrow win against Burundi’s Atletico yesterday at Kigali Regional stadium, Nyamirambo.
KCCA FC were the survivors of yesterday’s do or die tie against Atletico on match day 6 at this year’s CECAFA Kagame Cup after earning a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to Brian Umony’s goal in the 22nd minute of the first half and the entire team’s discipline displayed on the day.
Umony who was fouled in the 16 yard box by Atletico’s skipper Francis Nongwe put the Ugandan champions in the lead after converting a penalty spot just after 22 minutes of the game. The shirt 23 striker chest controlled Tom Masiko’s spectacular pass before being brought down by Nongwe and the referee made no mistake to make the right call. KCC FC headed into the game with a much more desire for a win than just a draw no wonder they since then sat back and defended their only goal of the day in what looked to be a much boring game on the evening.
KCC FC would have ended with a 2-0 margin but one of Brian Majwega’s shots hit the bar. The second half had little action with KCC FC continuing to defend their small lead and hence created less scoring chances though Umony and Majwega were twice denied by the good defensive play of Burundi side, Atletico.
KCC FC is now on top of group B with six points and a goal difference of one goal, followed by Djibouti’s Telecom FC, Rwanda’s APR FC and Atletico of Burundi all at 3 points in that respective order with Kenya’s Gor Mahia sitting at bottom of the group of death. KCC FC will be up against Rwanda’s APRFC on Sunday in their last game of the group stages that may decide who finishes top of the group. KCC FC now need pick at least a draw in their last game to confirm a place in the last eight.
