The Government of Uganda is implementing the GROW Project to support women in business and improve their incomes.
The project is officially known as the Generating Growth Opportunities and Productivity for Women Enterprises Project.
The initiative is funded by the World Bank and is designed to help women-owned businesses grow from small to larger and more productive enterprises.
Implementation and Leadership
The project is a government program led by the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development in partnership with the Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU). Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU)
It is also supported by the World Bank.
The project is being implemented across all districts, municipalities, and cities in Uganda, including refugee-hosting districts.
Main Goal of the GROW Project
The main goal of the GROW Project is to increase access to entrepreneurial services that help female entrepreneurs grow their businesses.
It focuses on supporting women to move their enterprises:
- From micro to small businesses
- From small to medium-sized enterprises
The support is provided in targeted locations across the country.
Target Beneficiaries
The project is expected to benefit both direct and indirect groups of people.
Direct beneficiaries include:
- Over 60,000 female-owned enterprises
- Including 3,000 refugee-owned businesses
- More than 280,000 women entrepreneurs and employees
- Including 42,000 refugees
- Including 14,000 members of host communities
Indirect beneficiaries include:
- Family members of women entrepreneurs
- Local communities
- Suppliers and service providers
- Distributors connected to women-led businesses
Expected Impact
The GROW Project is expected to improve business growth for women and create more jobs in communities.
It also aims to strengthen business networks and increase productivity in women-led enterprises.
By supporting both local and refugee women entrepreneurs, the project promotes inclusive economic growth across Uganda.
