In a lighthearted moment, the Speaker of Parliament has promised to pass the long-awaited Copyright Amendment Bill within three weeks, following a request from Ugandan music star Eddy Kenzo.
During a visit to the Speaker’s residence, Kenzo—accompanied by Senegalese football legend El Hadji Diouf—was asked to perform his hit song Sitya Loss.
However, the singer playfully set a condition: the Copyright Amendment Bill must be passed within three weeks. In response, the Speaker humorously agreed, stating, “I am going to do it very soon, as long as you sing ‘Sitya Loss’ for me.”
Kenzo, who leads the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF), has been at the forefront of efforts to push for copyright reforms.
For the past two years, he and his fellow artists have advocated for an amendment that better protects the rights and earnings of creatives. Their campaign recently gained momentum after President Museveni approved the Copyright Management System, designed to track and distribute royalties more effectively.
