Uganda rugby national team, the Rugby Cranes scooped the Nile Special/Uganda Sports Press Association Sports Personality award for the Month of June following their recent successes on different stages with the biggest being the Elgon Cup.
Under the charges of head coach John Duncan, the Rugby Cranes over turned a first leg defeat towards the end of last month to win the Elgon Cup after edging neighbors Kenya on aggregate 47-45.
Duncan believes that the USPA nod will motivate the team to even compete for more.
“That is very good and it will be a big motivation for the boys to know their achievement is being appreciated out there. It is going to help them step up their game to achieve more for their country in their next campaigns,” Duncan revealed.
Rugby Cranes gathered 415 points to defeat Vision Volleyball Camp team who bagged 350 points and professional boxer Farouk Daku (330points) to win the award during a voting by USPA members on Monday at their monthly assembly at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala. During the weekend, Rugby Cranes also defeated Ivory Coast by 40-11 at the Rugby Africa 1B tournament.
The monthly accolade is accompanied with a Ugx500,000 cash prize from Nile Breweries.
Kawempe Muslim Senior School were also recognized for winning the inaugural Women Elite Football League while Buganda region (winners of the regional golf tournament) and tennis star Duncan Mugabe were also commended.
