Muhammad Ssegirinya, popularly known as “Mr. Update,” was a Ugandan politician and social media personality who rose from humble beginnings to serve as the Member of Parliament for Kawempe North.

His untimely death on January 9, 2025, after battling cancer and other undisclosed illnesses, marked the end of a remarkable and sometimes controversial journey.
Early Life and Education
Born in 1988 in Butale, Kadugala, Masaka District, Ssegirinya was the eldest of five siblings in a Catholic family. During his childhood, he faced severe poverty, often selling sugarcane from his peasant father’s fields to make ends meet. Originally named Richard Ssegirinya, he converted to Islam and adopted the name Muhammad.

He began his education at Kadugala Primary School, earning 13 aggregates. He continued his studies at Kaddugala Secondary School and Pimba Secondary School in Kyebando. While his academic qualifications were modest, official records indicated that he held a certificate in Urban Food Experience from the Netherlands, which was equivalent to the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education, the minimum requirement for parliamentary service.

Rise to Fame
Ssegirinya gained recognition through his contributions to Kampala-based radio talk shows, branding himself as “Ssegirinya Eddoboozi lye Kyebando” (Ssegirinya, the Voice of Kyebando). His vibrant presence on social media as “Mr. Update” made him a household name, particularly among the youth.
Political Career
His political journey began with defeats in the 2011 and 2016 Kawempe North parliamentary races. However, he secured a councillor position for Kawempe North at Kampala Capital City Authority in 2016.

In 2021, under the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket, Ssegirinya contested again for the Kawempe North parliamentary seat. He emerged victorious against nine candidates, including incumbent Abdulatif Ssebagala Ssengendo and former Deputy Lord Mayor Sulaiman Kidandala. Despite a legal challenge from Kidandala, the courts upheld Ssegirinya’s victory.

Challenges and Controversies
Ssegirinya’s tenure in public service was not without difficulties. In September 2021, he was summoned by the Uganda Police over alleged involvement in rebel activities in the Greater Masaka region. He was subsequently charged with three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder and remanded to Kitalya Maximum Security Prison. He was granted bail in February 2023.
Legacy
Muhammad Ssegirinya’s life was a story of resilience and ambition. From selling sugarcane to becoming a voice for his community, he remained committed to public service despite numerous challenges. His passing leaves a significant gap in Kawempe North’s political landscape and in Uganda’s broader narrative of grassroots leadership.
He will be remembered as a man who defied the odds and inspired many with his relentless pursuit of change.
Rest in Peace Muhammad Ssegirinya!
