Kampala Capital City Authority Football Club (KCCA FC) pulled off an upset of the weekend when they beat Sudanese champions El Merreikh 2-0 away in their 2014 Orange Caf Champions League preliminary group stage first leg encounter on Saturday.
Herman Wasswa and Tony Odur were on the score sheet for coach George Nsimbe’s side as they avenged defeat of four years ago when Merreikh eliminated KCCA from the competition in the last of 16.
Wasswa opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a calm finish after some craft from William Wadri. His strike partner Odur doubled the lead a minute later with Wasswa providing the assist.
For a team that arrived in Sudan as outright underdogs, a 2-0 half time lead was more than a bonus to them. And despite endless attacks in search of a reply, Uganda’s representatives held on to ensure they return to Kampala with a two-goal cushion.
Prior to Saturday, the two teams had last met in 2009, then Merreikh eliminating the then called KCC 2-1 on aggregate. Merreikh fashioned a 1-0 victory in Kampala, with the tie in Khartoum ending 1-1.
KCCA will host the return leg on Saturday February 15 at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole. A draw of any kind will see them advance to the first round.
