Uganda’s cinematic landscape has reached new heights with the premiere of “Summitting Mount Elgon 3D,” a ground-breaking nature documentary that captivated audiences at Acacia Mall’s Century Cinemax on Thursday, May 16th, 2024. This historic film, directed by Denard Wogube and produced by Astronaut Pictures, marks the nation’s first venture into 3D filmmaking.

Audience members were left in awe, with reviews highlighting the immersive experience. “It was like I was climbing the mountain myself,” one viewer exclaimed, while another shared, “This is the type of content we like.”
The film, which documents the breathtaking journey up Mount Elgon, has garnered significant attention and is now nominated for the Uganda Film Festival 2024. Wogube, who also served as the film’s 3D stereographer, expressed his excitement and the challenges faced. “People are still very skeptical, many did not believe a Ugandan can make a movie in 3D,” he noted.

Wogube’s partner, Kyeyune Abdul, echoed this sentiment and emphasized their commitment to pushing the boundaries of Ugandan cinema. “We only make 3D movies from now on. Now that people have seen it themselves, they will know we are not a typical Ugandan film company. We specialize in high-end VFX and digital technologies. We are not anything like you have known yet. We are here to improve the local BinaUganda and make international films that can show even in IMAX cinemas,” Abdul stated.

Astronaut Pictures, the production company behind this innovative project, is determined to revolutionize the local film industry. Their pioneering efforts are not only setting new standards but also showcasing the potential of Ugandan talent on a global stage.
As “Summitting Mount Elgon 3D” continues to make waves, it is clear that Uganda’s film industry is on the cusp of a new era, driven by visionary filmmakers and cutting-edge technology. This film is a testament to what can be achieved with passion, innovation, and unwavering determination.
The director thanked UCC for sponsoring the film screening and for their immense support for Ugandan film and Century Cinemax Uganda, for the platform to showcase our local stories.
