Ugandan hip-hop artist Bigtril Kaiza finds himself in a quandary as he navigates the intricate process of obtaining clearance for a sample from the esteemed Congolese musician Papa Wemba. The sample is crucial for his upcoming song, but hurdles have arisen due to the closure of Papa Wemba’s former label.
Expressing his frustration via social media channels, Bigtril recently took to Twitter to lament the delay in releasing his new music.
In his tweet, he revealed the challenges he faces: “Bruuuuh I’m tryna release this music to yall but I have clear this Papa Wemba sample but the label he was signed to eventually shut down now I have no idea who owns his music.”
The situation highlights the complexities and legal intricacies involved in sampling copyrighted material, particularly when the original rights holders are no longer accessible or identifiable.
With Papa Wemba’s label defunct, Bigtril faces uncertainty regarding the ownership of the sampled music and the necessary permissions required for its use in his song.
The delay underscores a common issue faced by artists in the music industry, where the process of clearing samples can often be arduous and time-consuming.
Despite Bigtril’s eagerness to share his new music with his fans, the unresolved clearance issue has put a temporary halt to his plans.
Efforts to reach out to representatives of Papa Wemba’s estate or other relevant parties for clarification on the ownership of the sampled music have so far been unsuccessful.
As a result, Bigtril remains in limbo, awaiting resolution that will allow him to proceed with the release of his highly anticipated song.
In the interim, fans of Bigtril Kaiza eagerly await updates on the status of his new music, hopeful that the sampling clearance issue will soon be resolved, paving the way for the much-anticipated release.
