Coke Studio Raw is an online experiential activation that invited the audience to share a video of themselves singing a rendition of a Coke Studio track in order to win a prize. The competition ran from February – May 2014 andwas open to residents and citizens of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Nigeria aged 18 years and above.
To participate, the audience was asked to go to the Coke Studio Africa SoundCloud channel, choose one of the seven songs, record a short video of themselves singing the song, and submit the video via email or WhatsApp. Alternatively, they could upload their submissions onto their own YouTube channel accompanied by the hashtag #CokeStudioRaw or #CokeStudioAfrica. The videos submitted were then vetted and uploaded onto the Coke Studio Raw YouTube channel within 72 hours for entry. There were three rounds that entailed selecting the top three videos from each of the four markets and awarding the entrants with a Samsung phone.
In phase two of the competition, a panel shortlisted 40 videos which were further narrowed down to 20. These videos were then uploaded onto the Coke Studio Africa Facebook page and fans asked to vote for their favorite by commenting on it. One unique comment was equal to one vote. The top two entrants from each market with the most voted were then awarded with a fully paid trip for two to the Coke Studio Africa recording sessions in Nairobi, Kenya.
The winners included two Ugandans that is Ckastiro Maliza for the month of July and Imelda Ddambya for the month of August.
