Tengi Styles, one of the designers who have been behind popularizing the Kitenge fashion trend in Jinja, is giving back to the community.
The Jinja-based fashion house drew mass appeal to kitenge by adding a twist to the way the Kitengi is donned through the use of creative ways to incorporate it in fashionable clothing, purses, and even backpacks.
The one year old but strongly growing business uses the sell of Kitengi material to support a local charity, Abaana Abaidho Organisation, an NGO in Buwenge.
The NGO is trying to improve livelihoods of underprivileged children in Jinja by providing them with an opportunity to identify, learn and practice their art talents. The organisation also provides tailoring skills to the girl child and needy women in the community and that’s where Tengi Styles come in.
Meanwhile, 2018 was the year of ‘Kitenge’ fashion. From the red carpet to casual evenings to formal wear, kitenge dominated every occasion. And it is expected to continue trending in 2019.
