Ugandan rapper St. Nellysade has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding Kapeke’s recent win at the Galaxy FM awards, insisting that the singer’s hit song “Kabba” should not have been recognized in the Hip Hop category.
Kapeke was crowned Hip-Hop Artiste of the Year at the recent awards organized by Galaxy FM, a move that has since sparked heated discussions within Uganda’s hip-hop fraternity.
Speaking out on the matter, St. Nellysade admitted he was surprised by the decision.
“I was really surprised because Kapeke is not a hip-hop artiste, to be honest with you,” he said. “What I did was go and check the nominees, and I saw actual rappers there, the likes of Da Agent.”
While he acknowledged Kapeke’s talent and even praised “Kabba” as a good song, St. Nellysade maintained that the track does not qualify as rap or hip-hop.
“I am a fan of Kapeke, and I also enjoy his song ‘Kabba,’ but it is not a rap song. It is not a hip-hop song,” he emphasized.
According to the rapper, his criticism is not rooted in jealousy or personal dislike but in his understanding of the genre.
“Kapeke did a good song, he sang very well, but it is not rap. And this is not hatred or jealousy, but according to me and the way I understand hip-hop and rap, he did not rap, he sang. He is a very good singer. The whole thing felt very belittling to us,” he added.
