Uganda have been encouraged by scan results on skipper Andy Mwesigwa’s foot after the defender hurt his ankle in a league match on Saturday.

The FC Ordabasy defender twisted his ankle when he leapt high and landed awkwardly on his heel as his side lost 3-1 to FC Astana in a Kazakhstan Premier League game.

The injury left Cranes coach Micho Sredojevic and Ugandans praying Mwesigwa recovers in time for September 7’s World Cup qualifying decider against Senegal in Marrakesh, Morocco.

But after a scan done on Monday, the defender will be out for about one and a half weeks, which only leaves Mwesigwa with a remote chance of featuring against Senegal.

“The doctor said it will take me one and half weeks to be fine. They only discovered swellings with water but the bones are fine,” said Mwesigwa.

The player though still can’t walk well and his specialist says he can only start jogging in three to four days.

Uganda must beat Senegal to progress to the final round of qualification while the latter can do with a draw.
