Sammy Okanya has revealed that he was recently arrested over an unpaid debt owed to a Kenyan businessman, which he acknowledges and says he is working towards clearing.
Speaking in a recent interview with Sanyuka TV, Sammy explained that he entered into a business partnership with a Kenyan man who dealt in jewellery in 2023.
He revealed that he owed the businessman KShs 10,000, which he said was equivalent to approximately UGX 37 million at the time. He has since repaid about UGX 14 million, leaving an outstanding balance.
“He has been demanding this money and unfortunately, it was around that time when I got arrested because of the Speaker’s issues,” he explained.
Sammy said he tried explaining to the businessman that his arrest had kept him in prison for over a year, something he eventually seemed to understand.
However, he believes his recent business ventures, which appear promising, may have given the Kenyan businessman the impression that he now has money but is deliberately refusing to settle the debt, possibly contributing to his recent arrest.
“I wouldn’t be able to pay him when in prison, so we made an agreement for how I’ll be able to pay him back his money,” he said.
He further stressed that he has never denied owing the money and has always acknowledged the debt, knowing that it could eventually cause him problems if left unsettled.
