Singer Sama Sojah has shared his thoughts on what it takes for musicians to succeed in Uganda, arguing that being overly disciplined can sometimes make artists easy to take advantage of.
Speaking on Galaxy TV, Sama said he was surprised to discover that good manners and discipline alone do not guarantee success in the local music industry.
“You won’t find five disciplined musicians, and I’m not among them. The more you show people that you have discipline, they turn you into a rug. So it’s important to have some discipline with respect,” he said.
Sama went on to recall an experience where he allowed other musicians to perform before him even though he had arrived at the venue earlier.
“I left them to sing, thinking that they had somewhere to be, but when time also caught up with me and I wanted to step on stage, the microphone was to be fought for,” he explained.
For Sama, the experience showed him that musicians need to be respectful but also know when to assert themselves, especially in situations where everyone is competing for the same opportunity.
