Political activist and People Power mobilizer, Magala Namwebya Lilian is now living a fugitive life for fear her life may be in danger for her role in the Pressure Group’s mobilization activities.
Magala fled the country in October 2019 to the US where she continues her activism work and support for the People Power movement along with other sympathizers for the cause in the diaspora.
She told local media recently that she is scared to return home for fear that her life may be in danger.
She said that her work has brought her in conflict with the ruling party and thus a target for political persecution and remains worried she will be incarcerated on arrival in the country.
Her fears stem from the government’s iron hand attitude in dealing with the opposition following the many reports of arrest and alleged torture of detained opposition actors.
Led by musician turned legislator, Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, the People Power movement has become a force to reckon with in the political sphere as it continues to amass popularity among the youth.
The movement has been critical of the ruling government on issues such as human rights abuse and corruption among others.
The rise in the movement’s popularity has seen Bobi Wine become the political opposition figurehead in Uganda. This comes at time when the nation is preparing for the next general election come 2021.
