Again production and consummation of crude waragi has become a sensitive issue in Uganda. Following the death of several people after consuming the local gin, IGP Kale Kayihura together with his team have banned and are meant to wipe out the production and sale of crude waragi in Uganda.
Cases have been reported in Kabale district where four people died as a result of consuming the local gin. A few years ago, the suggestion of banning local brew was tabled in parliament but it didn’t succeed.
Olivia Rosemary Wawile, the Kigezi regional police commander announced the ban on Friday. She said the decision was taken by Kabale district security committee to stop more waragi related deaths. It was revealed that the four people who died had consumed a gin locally made & named as “Mujakure”, meaning grab her/him.
Mrs. Wawile claims that some of the distillers of the crude waragi produce it in very unhygienic conditions while others spike it with it potentially harmful chemicals, which has disastrous effects to consumers.
Alcohol takers should be preparing to dig deep in their pockets because only beers and expensive gins and spirits will be the only ones available.
