Six Iranians have been arrested for a video that shows them dancing to Pharrell Williams‘s hit ‘Happy’.
The clip features three unveiled women and three men dancing in what Tehran police chief Hossein Sajedinia called “a vulgar clip which hurt public chastity”.
According to BBC News, Sajedinia commented that the clip “was released in cyberspace [and] police decided to identify those involved in making that clip”.
Iran’s version of Islamic law requires women to cover their hair and wear loose-fitting clothes to protect their modesty, with a ‘morality police’ unit ensuring women respect the code.
The video was removed from YouTube following the group’s arrest but has since been reposted by different users.
Pharrell responded to the group’s arrest, posting on Facebook: “It is beyond sad that these kids were arrested for trying to spread happiness.”
