In a recent interview on Sanyuka TV’s “Bigenda Bitya” show with host Anna Talia Oze, news anchor and producer Hatmah Nalugwa Ssekaaya sparked controversy by suggesting that women should allow their partners to have multiple wives.
Ssekaaya argued that this arrangement would afford women more autonomy and decision-making power.
“Men have a lot of work. Women should allow their men to have more women as wives. It allows you as a woman to be alone and make decisions without anybody’s influence. It gives you relief as a woman,” stated Ssekaaya during the interview.
Ssekaaya’s remarks did not come as a surprise to the public, given her known adherence to the Islamic faith, which permits polygamy among men.
This statement comes at a significant juncture in Ssekaaya’s career as she recently transitioned from the newsroom set to the backroom of news production at Next Media Services.
Polygamy remains a contentious topic in many societies, with varying cultural, religious, and legal perspectives.
While some view it as a legitimate practice sanctioned by tradition or faith, others argue that it perpetuates inequality and can lead to issues such as neglect and competition among wives.
Ssekaaya’s comments have sparked debate and drawn mixed reactions from the public, with some supporting her perspective while others vehemently disagree.
As discussions surrounding gender roles, relationships, and societal norms continue to evolve, Ssekaaya’s endorsement of polygamy serves as a reminder of the diverse viewpoints present within communities and the ongoing dialogue needed to address complex social issues.
