Nelson Mandela International Day 2015 Celebrations Postponed

The South African High Commission has postponed the celebration of Nelson Mandela International Day 2015 that was supposed to be held at the Kawotta Saviour’s Primary School, Kajjansi this Friday. This comes following the sudden death of the founding father of Kawotta Saviour’s Primary school, Rev Joseph Mwesigwa Katabaro, who passed away last night.

In order to allow the family and school time to mourn the passing away of such a hugely loved member of their community, and in agreement with the school director and son of Rev Katabaro, Big Sam, the Nelson Mandela day celebrations have been postponed to next week on Friday, 24 July 2015.

As stated on the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s website, Nelson Mandela Day is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life and legacy. It is a global movement to honour his life’s work and act to change the world for the better.

In line with some of the themes for the day such as Food Security, Education and Literacy, the High Commission will join hands with the management of South African companies such as MTN, ESKOM, SHOPRITE and CENTURY BOTTLING in dedicating 67 minutes of our time to engage in activities such as the unveiling of a computer laboratory donated by MTN and ESKOM; planting seedlings in the school’s vegetable garden; and clearing the school’s playground area to commemorate the day at the school.

With the assistance of the Ugandan National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO), staff members of the High Commission and participating partners will join the teachers and children of the school as well as parents and leaders in their community in planting trees on the grounds of the school, enlarge the school’s vegetable garden, and present donations of foodstuffs and drinks provided by SHOPRITE and CENTURY BOTTLING.

Following the unveiling of the computer laboratory donated by MTN and ESKOM, MTN will provide the school children with the MTN Internet Bus for the day during which the children will have an opportunity to familiarize themselves with computers.

The High Commission hereby calls for all to preserve the legacy of Nelson Mandela by dedicating 67 minutes of their time on 18 July, wherever they may be, to engage in selfless activities to make the lives of the less privileged in our societies better.
