Analysts of the National Schools Championship

The regional finalists of the National Schools Championship (NSC) 2021 have been announced.

Following a rigorous screening process in which a panel of business analysts assessed a total of 532 business idea profiles, 28 finalists were selected, comprising 20 schools, 4 NSC alumni and 4 patron teachers. The business ideas included among others, commercial rearing of lab rats, production of flavoured shea butter, and shoe vera – a polythene material to extend shoe life.

Some of the selected schools included; Mityana Trinity College, King’s College Budo, Kitante Hill School, Mbazzi Riverside High School, Kigumba Intensive S. School, St Andrew’s College, Wisdom High School, Hope Senior School, Kyebambe Girls’ S.S, Mbarara S.S., Kabalega Trust S.S, Bweranyangi Girls’ S.S, Busoga High School, Kiira College Butiki, Mpumudde Seed SSS, and Musana Vocational High School among others.

Speaking during the announcement, Barbara Kasekende, Stanbic Bank’s Corporate Social Investment Manager said, “As a bank, it’s our responsibility to identify amazing ideas, and provide the necessary resources and environment for them to grow into sustainable businesses. Since Uganda has one of the youngest populations in the world, what better place to start than with students?”

She said, “One out of every three of the submitted business ideas were in the manufacturing sector, 24% in agriculture and 7% in ICT. Half of the business ideas were submitted by female participants and 14% of the winning business ideas by orphan- or community-based schools.”

Whereas the NSC initially targeted only students, the 2021 championship has grown to four categories; BizGrow for already existing NSC student businesses in schools; StartUp for new student businesses in schools; AlumGrow for NSC alumni who have completed secondary education; and TeachGrow for NSC patron teachers.

“There is a critical need for such skilling, not only among students, but also teachers and the general public. Through the National Schools Championship, we are aiming for systemic impact beyond individuals, families and schools, to entire communities and the country as a whole,” Kasekende points out, “because Uganda is our home and we drive her growth.”

The Stanbic National Schools Championship was started in 2015 as a corporate social investment programme aimed at equipping students with knowledge and skills not taught in the classroom. These included personal finance, life skills and business management, on the theme ‘empowering the job creators of tomorrow’.

Since then, over 180 schools have participated in the Championship, over 20 businesses have been set up by students and the Championship is directly contributing towards eight United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
