MTV Shuga Season Six has premiered in Uganda. The new season of the TV drama series premiered at an exclusive silent screening event held at Sky Lounge on Thursday evening.

Speaking at the premiere, Humphrey Nabimanya, the Team Leader & Founder of Reach A Hand Uganda, underscored the importance of the drama series in spreading the message of sexual health among the youth.

“Reach A Hand Uganda is committed to empowering young people in Uganda, and through MTV Shuga, we believe it addresses key social issues affecting young people not only in Uganda, but Africa and this is through realistic storylines and characters that resonate with them. The series seeks to impart knowledge and empower the youth to take positive action towards their health and lives.” Said Humphrey Nabimanya.

He further revealed that Ugandan and Nigerian actors are collaborating to make a Ugandan version of the TV drama series aimed at telling a story that resonates with the local youth, with the first episode expected to premiere before the end of the year.

Season 6 dubbed “MTV Shuga Naija”, was shot in Nigeria and weaves in stories that will speak to young people cross not only across Nigeria, but Africa at large and the many gatekeepers they have to engage with as they navigate choices about safe sex, family planning, the use of contraceptives, peer pressure, domestic and sexual violence.

The premiere was graced by Nigerian actor Emmanuel Ikubese alongside a host of other local celebrities. It culminated with a performance from musicians Toniks and Geosteady.

Big Talent entertainment under the stewardship of top singer Eddy Kenzo has announced the signing of solo artiste Elysha Mutebi aka Ely Dre cementing their commitment towards making him a musical repertoire.

is a Ugandan singer, songwriter, pianist, and established live performer. The contract was signed this morning Friday 14th September 2018 at the Big Talent offices on Salama Road.

“Elysha is a good artiste and as Big Talent, we feel we are in position to help him change his story,” states Eddy Kenzo, CEO Big Talent

In his words, Ely Dre expresses his excitement about the new deal, “This is one of the happiest moments in my life ever. This is the beginning of a new era. I can’t wait to give to the world what I have in store for all of you.”

Born on 31st July 1992 in Makindye, Elysha began singing at the age of 10 in church without any direction. At the age of 14, he learnt how to play the piano from which he started playing at his church in Buziga. In 2012, he decided to fully pursue his music career by venturing into commercial music. He has performed and still performs with the finest bands in Uganda like S&S Band and Band Cindy
Elysha’s inspiration stems from everyday life experiences and to a small extent, his own imagination.

Nigerian singer Korede Bello has cautioned youth against using drugs. The “Godwin” star made the remarks while speaking at press conference held on Thursday afternoon at The Lawns Restaurant.

“I know what it means to be a teen,” he said. “But you dont have to use drugs like tobacco to be cool. It is actually very rewarding to lead a clean lifestyle.”

Korede, who jetted into the country on Wednesday night, will be headlining the Fly Fest which is slated for this Saturday, September 15th at Lugogo Hockey Grounds. He will perform alongside several Ugandan musicians including Geosteady, Spice Diana, Lydia Jazmine, Da Agent Levixone and Coop Bly among others.

The Fly Fest is aimed at celebrating teen voices ahead of the new school term. The fest will be a fun-filled event with lots of activities lined up including games, mentor-ship sessions and performances.

“Lets come out in big numbers and do our thing. I am looking forward to having a good time, and engaging in different sports activities with all the young people.” He added.

Fly is a community of teens expressing who they are through the choices they make. It is an initiative that is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, with the aim of reducing the uptake of smoking amongst teenagers in Uganda.

Pearl of Africa Fashion Awards founder and CEO, Yoweri Munamasaka said that this year’s event will encourage new entrants to the fashion industry, but also seek to provide a platform for young, unemployed youth to get jobs in the industry.

“Last year there was cash and other prizes unveiled at the nomination gala, but this time around the country should await for a mega prize and surprise come the 15th of December 2018,” he noted.

According to the organisers, the submissions will open in October and the nomination list will be out in November.
