  • MTN Uganda has announced the appointment of Chief Community Officers (CCOs) to enhance its community engagement efforts.
  • The CCOs will play a crucial role in offering a better understanding of the needs and aspirations of communities across Uganda.
  • The objective of this effort is to strengthen relationships and MTN’s impact at the grass roots, both in terms of service provision and support for socio-development needs of communities.

MTN Uganda has taken another step towards enhancing its community engagement efforts with the appointment of Chief Community Officers (CCOs). These new CCOs will help MTN Uganda better understand the needs and aspirations of communities in Uganda, ultimately enabling MTN to execute a needs-led strategy.

As part of this initiative, Joseph Bogera, MTN Uganda’s General Manager for Sales & Distribution, recently visited business communities in Masaka, where Owetikibwa Kiwalabye Male was named Chief Community Officer for the Greater Masaka area.

MTN’s commitment to connecting with and supporting communities is reflected in this move to appoint CCOs like Male, who will serve as a bridge between the company and local communities.

While announcing the Masaka CCO, Bogera said:

“Owetikibwa Kiwalabye Male is an ideal fit for the role of Chief Community Officer for Greater Masaka as he is a core distributor in this area. With MTN’s growing market share and status as a top taxpayer in the region, we are committed to building sustainable partnerships with the communities we serve.

The past two years of lockdown have taken a toll on entrepreneurs, causing many to lose capital and shutter their businesses. MTN is dedicated to creating a platform for these entrepreneurs to share their experiences and inspire others in similar situations.

Our appointment of Chief Community Officers demonstrates our commitment to listening to our customers and developing strategies that empower them to thrive in their businesses, families, and communities.”

Denis Ssentongo, the Manager of Justma Enterprises Limited in Masaka, spoke on behalf of the Masaka CCO and stressed the importance of strengthening relationships with people at the grassroots level. He said that through this initiative MTN Uganda will create sustainable value for its customers and the communities where they live.

To better understand the needs of communities in Masaka, Bogera, representatives of the CCO, and Patrick Tusiime, MTN’s Commercial Head Central, met with unstoppable entrepreneurs such as the Masaka Tusitukire Wamu Association – Tumakas, made up of over 3,000 members. MTN also visited Mzee Jamil Walugembe of Twekembe garage in Masaka City, who has been in business since 1984 and works with more than 40 employees, including some he is mentoring. MTN also interacted with the local business community at Masaka Central Market to better understand how the company can support them.

More CCOs will be appointed to cover the entire country, reflecting MTN’s continued efforts to build a culture of community engagement and drive its strategy from the ground up. MTN is committed to creating sustainable value for its customers and communities, and the CCOs will play a critical role in achieving this goal.
