Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has retorted in anger over Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure’s comments suggesting he must show some ‘respect’.
The Portuguese tactician took Friday’s pre-match press conference as an opportunity to reply to the Citizens midfielder, after the Ivoirian slammed Mourinho for his openness in talking about people.
After being knocked out of the Champions League by Barcelona, Toure commented: “Mourinho is a coach and he must give respect a little bit. He is always talking about everyone and that is not the correct way. That is why Barcelona always beat Madrid when Mourinho was here.”
It created a window of opportunity for the former Inter coach to snap back at the Ivoirian: “If to say before the Munich (Bayern-Arsenal) and Camp Nou (Barcelona-City) matches that these matches are not over, that Arsenal and City have enough quality to go there and turn things around, if to support the teams from the country where I work, if this is a lack of respect, okay that’s a lack of respect, Toure has a strange concept of lack of respect.
“I tried on both occasions to be respectful of the two English teams and I want to say the same about Manchester United. I think they are a better team than Olympiacos and I think United can do it.
“I hope they do it. If [Wayne] Rooney, [Robin] Van Persie, [Michael] Carrick or [Rio] Ferdinand say Mourinho is not being respectful, I think they are wrong because I support the English teams and I was not happy that the English teams were out of the competition,” he added.
