Two skateboarders were identified in Lira Town as potential skateboarding champions in the ongoing Mountain Dew Skateboarding Championship Tour.

The event which took place over the weekend at Lira Municipal Grounds saw Donald Obua and Steven Apali emerge the best skateboarders in Lira.

According to Berna Kizza the Mountain Dew Brand Manager, this automatically makes these two finalists at the Mountain Dew Skateboarding grand finale in Kampala on august 27, 2016.

“They have proven beyond doubt that they are the best in Lira and because we are looking for potential contenders, they will compete against the winners from the other regions,” said Berna.

Lira is the seventh place the Mountain Dew Skateboarding tour has taken place after Iganga, Mbale, Masaka, Mbarara, Fortportal, and Arua. In most of the areas, finalists have been identified.

According to Obua, one of the finalists, his dream is to push skateboarding beyond just a fun activity but also a competitive sport in Uganda.

“In the western world, skateboarding in a job, people skateboard for a living. I want the same to be for us here in Uganda. I thank Mountain Dew for supporting the sport and giving skateboarders an opportunity to shine,” said Obua.

The Mountain Dew Skateboarding championship is an initiative of Crown Beverages Limited through one of its brands Mountain Dew aimed at inspiring youth in Uganda to be bold, daring, cool headed, fun seeking, but also enlighten them on how they can minimize fatalities associated with extreme sports; in this case skateboarding.
