Uganda coach Micho Sredojevic has leapt to the defence Emmanuel Okwi and Godfrey Walusimbi’s inclusion in the team preparing for Cecafa, which gets underway later this month in Nairobi.
The two experienced stars, who Micho intends to take with him to Chan in South Africa in January, are some of the players who returned home after failed professional stints in Tunisia and DRC.
“I want to take a team to Chan with a blend of experience and youth,” said the Serbian coach, adding, “I always give chance to new players coming in but I need the experienced ones to help the ones coming through.
“And if they are playing well there is no rule that stops me from adding them to my team. What I don’t want is to have foreign based players featuring in the Cecafa tournament.”
However, it remains to be seen if Okwi and Walusimbi (latter yet to get his ITC), who returned to the domestic league last month, will be allowed to feature in Chan, a tournament reserved for locally based players.
Okwi is only on loan from Tunisian club Etoile Du Sahel, meaning he is still a foreign-based player.
“As far as we know he is eligible to play because Fifa authorized his loan move to play domestically but now that you have brought it up, we are going to write to them (Fifa) and confirm,” Fufa CEO Edgar Watson explained.
