What started with Uganda’s most successful team (SC Villa) as far as Ugandan club football is concerned has started spreading to the other FUFA Super League clubs that would like to dominate Ugandan football like Villa did in the early 2000s. Villa recruited about three foreign players from countries like Nigeria, Zambia and Kenya. 8th league table finishers Kira Young have also borrowed leaf from the best by recruiting two new players of Nigerian origin.
As the kick-off of the new domestic 2014/15 season draws closer, Kira Young football club have also embarked on strengthening their squad so as to comfortably compete for the title. Among their new recruits are Lucky Hero (striker), Patrick Skills (holding midfielder) from Nigeria and Malon Tangawuzi a defender from Kenya.
Jimmy Lukwago, the club director while at Kira Town Council grounds during a training session said, “we are still in a team building process. I will soon come up with the correct frame of the team and the right players.”
“We have already lost some of our star players who have left for bigger clubs like defender and former captain Richard Kassaga who is now at KCCA on a season long deal and midfielder Steven Kawuma,” Lukwago who was also involved in coaching activities of the team added.
The team has been very busy during the off-season especially in the last two weeks and has played several friendlies to keep the players fit and stable ahead of the new season. In some of the games played, they lost to Uganda cup winners URA who beat them by 2 – 1 and drew 2 games with the same opposition.
Kira Young managed to beat 6th placed table finishers and Jinja based outfit Bull FC by 2-1 before beating a 3rd division Mukono side of Trinity FC by 4-1.
Head coach, Harunah Kebba said, “the essence of playing all these games is that we expect to know the final team after a series of pre-season games with Vipers and Lweza all which will be played this week. With Richard Kasaga gone to KCC, the team is in a quest of a central defender and another striker to complement the available options at hand.”
The FUFA Super league is set to kick off on the 2nd September 2014.
