Kampala Capital City Authority was thumped by Djibouti’s Telecom in the Kagame cup that is ongoing in Rwanda. Uganda’s champions KCCA FC suffered a 2-1 defeat in game yesterday that saw Telecom open their Kagame Cup campaign.
Coming into the game with all the confidence of having won their game opener against Kenya’s Gor Mahia, KCC FC started stronger of the two sides with Brian Umony forcing a save from goalie Jeef Inzokira in just two minutes after kick off. Nsimbe’s side continued to be brighter as they created more scoring chances than their opponents. Brian Majwega put a golden opportunity to waste when he shot the ball wide after receiving a killer back heel pass from Brian Umony inside the 16yard box in the 15th minute of the game.
The game was so tense for the Djibouti side (Telecom) as it took them 16 minutes to put KCCA’s goalie, Yasin Mugabi to a test who did well to tame Freddy Adasango low shot from the free kick. Telecom’s attempt on goal only intensified the game that drove them into fouling Brian Majwega, eight minutes after their first attempt. KCCA’s Wadri made no mistake as he brilliantly took the free kick spot down the left after that foul on Majwega though his efforts were fruitless as the ball hit the wood work.
Having settled into the game, Telecom created better chances than those of their opponents as Aboubaker Djama had a chance to put the Djibouti champions into the lead but his shot only to be saved by Mugabi who looked more formidable in his goal. Djibouti’s champions went ahead to create another great opportunity in the 32nd minute of the game but Andasango’s flicked pass just went begging as it couldn’t find anyone to connect it into the back of the net with Mugabi already beaten.
Towards the end of the first 45 minutes, Brian Majwega hit the bar after dribbling past a throng of legs on the edge of the 18 yard box and with just a minute remaining to call it quits for the first half, Telecom broke the deadlock with a cool finish thanks to Mustapha Muhammad’s strike.
Into the second half, KCCA FC’s search for an equalizer resumed with Wadri William getting the first chance that was saved by Inzokira’s heroics in goal and three minutes later, Umony missed another glorious chance to put the Ugandan champions level after failing to beat Inzokira one on one after being released by Wadri. The fruitless efforts forced Nsimbe to make his first substitution introducing Herman Wasswa for Derrick Nsibambi. Wasswa who almost found the back of the net but his volley in the 64th minute hit the back of Anwar Sadat Ibrahim before Inzokira collected.
The kasasiro boys never gave up until they equalized thanks to Wadri’s header that found the back of the net after Sakka Mpiima’s brilliant cross. Nsimbe then introduced Steven Bengo for Owen Kasule but in the 81st minute, KCC FC suffered a great blow after Ronnie Kisekka was sent off for an intended hand ball in the centre of the pitch. This called for a forced change to strengthen the defence, after-all half a loaf is better than nothing that KCC started hoping to walk away with a draw. Nsimbe therefore introduced Richard Kasagga for Sakka Mpiima but just a few minutes later Telecom hit the winner on a counterattack as Aboubaker Djama slotted home the winner in the 88th minute.
Due to the loss, KCC FC now fell to third place in group B with 3 points but zero goal difference with APR FC and Telecom also on 3points. Gor Mahia FC and Burundi’s Atletico are on zero pints. KCCA FC will return to action on Wednesday 13th against Atletico FC at Nyamirambo.
