With Uganda ranked highly among most beer consuming countries in the world, the Kampala Beer Festival was bound to attract innumerable thirsty souls. And it, indeed, drew throngs of people to Uganda Museum on Saturday as the festival went underway. The festival showcased different beer brands where revelers braved the opportunity and drank themselves to cabbages.
With 10,000shs that one needed to part with to access the premises, one would be tempted to argue whether it was necessary to fork out a penny yet they were going to buy beer for themselves. However, discounts on beers were promised. Regardless, folks braved the cold weather and pitched up to drink because, yes, this is Uganda and, here, we love our gin. We love our beer. And we drink it no matter the conditions. The festival attracted a chunk of white folk who seemed to have more knowledge about such festivals. There was music on the house as well. So, drunken folks wobbled on the wet floor as the beer took shape in their heads.
The festival which was bound to start at 12pm saw most people saunter in towards 5pm. The frosty evening, suddenly, turned warm as drinks escorted bites down the throat. People were seen scattered about the premises engaged in drunken banter. Girls, who dressed the nines, were present and they, too, drank like fish; something that is expected of Kampala girls. They stick their noses in the air like greyhounds and chase where the party is. At the end of the day, it was bliss. And the festival came to pass.
