Joshua Baraka has opened up about his upbringing and the difficult decisions he had to make between pursuing his passion for music and fulfilling his family’s expectations.

In a heartfelt revelation, Baraka shared that his mother had always dreamed of seeing him become a doctor.

Growing up, he says he was determined to be a good son and not add to his mother’s burdens. “I just wanted to be a good kid and I didn’t give her a hard time because she was already suffering, and they wanted me to be a doctor,” he said.

Baraka described his mother as a resilient woman who hustled hard to support the family—first selling popcorn, then clothes. He says her tireless efforts became a deep source of motivation for him.

While the pressure to become a doctor was real, Baraka never lost sight of his true dream—music.

“My dream was always to make music, but at that time it didn’t seem realistic, so I just decided to focus on what was ahead of me,” he explained. He even went as far as studying Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB) at A-Level, preparing to follow the medical path.

Despite his efforts to please his family, Baraka’s heart remained in music. Today, that passion has catapulted him into the limelight, with hit songs and collaborations earning him a solid place in Uganda’s music scene.
