Janani Luwum memorial day has been declared a public holiday.
According to a letter from the Ministry of Public Service, Tuesday 16th February, 2016 will be a public holiday in recognition of Archbishop Janani Luwum memorial.
Janani Luwum is celebrated nationally for his contribution to the fight against Idi Amin’s tyranny.
Janani was the archbishop of the Church of Uganda from 1974 to 1977. He was arrested in February 1977 and died shortly after. Although the official account describes a car crash, it is generally accepted that he was murdered on the orders of then-President Idi Amin.
