We caught up with Sweden based stylist Krinastyler who narrated to us how her passion for designing led her to becoming a stylist. The mother of two works in one of the biggest clothing stores in Sweden and also styles some of Uganda’s top celebrities.
On her back ground she told us:
“I was a girl who had only two pairs of clothing with no shoes deep in a village where I didn’t know what technology or television is. Many years I lived without knowing the difference between rich and poor, walking barefoot 6 kilometers to and from school, to be honest I never complained that I wanted more because I had a roof on my head and food to eat.”
Speaking about what motivated her to start doing fashion she said:
“I always never knew that I was interested in fashion but people always complimented my dressing and said I had it in me but I really never believed that it’s true, and yet I was very interested in fashion television, news and magazines. It was like a normal thing for me just like guys watch football and know they’re not good at playing it.”
“I went through a lot indeed, growing up it never occurred to me that I was beautiful because I didn’t fit into the Ugandan standard of beauty, that is big bums, hips and light skin. I am a dark skinny girl and that really had an impact on my confidence, I thought I would never achieve any of my dreams in Uganda so I gave up in trying anything at all however everything changed when I moved to Europe. The things that I never thought were nice about me were being complimented like my dark skin they said it wasn’t so amazing and would die to have it. When I went to school people would compliment me on my dressing and asking me where I buy my things and how I put my clothes together to match the colors, sometimes a few of them came for advice if they had an event to attend and styling them became exciting for me and motivated me to venture into the fashion world further more I have an amazing group of friends in Europe that have been very encouraging, supportive and sometimes give me tough love inform of constructive criticism that has helped me to grow and involve in the fashion industry.”
Krinastyler will be actively venturing into the Ugandan fashion industry this year.
