George William Kigozi who also goes by his stage name Geosteady has spoken out about his woes with the late Elly Wamala’s family and vowed never to do any song without permission. In an interview, the 24 year old revealed that he has learnt his lesson from the troubles he faced after releasing a remake of Elly’s song illegally.
The Open Vybez Entertainment singing group founder revealed to us what happened after he was dragged to court and later to jail by Elly Wamala’s family after accusing him of copyright infringement. “It was the toughest experience I have ever gone through but to cut the long story short, we came to a settlement and I was required to pay some money, which I did, with the balance to be completed in a few months to come.” He said in the interview.
The singer even went ahead to reconcile with the family in order to make sure that they are in good terms. “We no longer have grudges against each other.” Geosteady added.
When asked about whether he can now re-do any song without coming to an agreement with the copyright owners first, the “Ntunulila” singer disclosed that he can never make the same mistake twice. “I can never do a song again without getting rights. Never. It was a lesson well learnt.” He said.
The young vibrant singer was asked to pay 40 million shillings early this year for copyright infringement, he paid part of the amount and promised to clear the rest later.
Geosteady is well known for the “Viola” song. In addition to this, he has done songs like “I’m In Luv”, “Bazinanga Batyo”, “Apaana”, “She Wants Me” and another one called “African Gal” which he did with fellow musician Eddy Kenzo.
Well there you have it, Geosteady will surely not re-do any song again unless he is sure that it will not land him in any trouble.
