League champions Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) were in battle on Saturday against Uganda Cup champions – Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) in the Uganda Super Cup (Uganda’s Community Shield). KCCA beat URA 2-0 to win the Uganda Super Cup as they continue with their preparations for the CECAFA Kagame Cup that is set to kick off this Friday, 8th August.
“URA has given us a very good test to identify our strength and weaknesses, some players are a bit not yet fit and others lack experience but will be ready by Friday,” said KCCA head coach, George Best Nsimbe after the game on Saturday.
KCCA’s quest for a second CECAFA challenge Kagame Club championship will begin against a familiar opposition when they meet Gor Mahia in their group B opening game of the 14 team tournament. The two teams meet on Friday with a possibility of Kenyan side Gor Mahia having four Ugandan players in their side also being coached by former cranes head coach Bobby Williamson.
Godfrey Walusimbi, Godfrey KIzito, Israel Emuge and Arthur Semmazzi could all feature against KCCA who last won the regional title in 1978, the same year in which Uganda was last seen at the Africa Cup of Nations. Nsimbe’s side will then proceed with Djibouti’s Telecom and Burundi’s Flambeau before wrapping up the group with Rwanda’s champions APR.
The tournament has been dominated by Kenyan teams as the most successful clubs with Ugandan clubs winning it just five times, with the last coming in 2006 when Police won it after beating Tanzania’s Moro United 2-1 in the finals.
The winners of the tournament will walk away with $30,000 (Ushs 75 million). Vital’O of Burundi are the defending champions of the tournament after beating APR last year.
CECAFA fixtures for KCCA:
KCCA vs Gor Mahia (August 8th)
KCCA vs Telecom (August 10th)
KCCA vs Flambeau (August 13th)
KCCA vs APR (August 15th)
