Picture a faceless news anchor reading news in a baritone voice with rich lyricism and a crazy beat. Have you? No. Imagine an enigmatic figure, ducked behind a mask, anchoring news in a way so creative you wish he shares with you what he eats. He is Enigma. One of the best wordsmiths that have ever graced area code 256. I doff my hat to Enigma because, well, not for his personality per se (not that I loathe his personality, I like it), but his ability to keep hidden away from the camera and, strangely, comes off as good as you would less imagine.
Over the years, towards the end of the year, Enigma has always sat down, wore his mask (he must be sleeping in it) and wrote a recap of what made the headlines in that year. Politics. Lifestyle. Trends. Scandals. Et al. He has always pegged them together, gotten a beat and poured them on it. What have we always gotten? A masterpiece! News at 20:14 is not any different from his past projects. He recounts what took place in 2014. News that stood out. Stuff that made people froth on the mouth. Stuff that twisted people’s pants. Stuff that made people run up the wall, or stuff that made people talk endlessly. The beat is so epic, in this. But then again, the beat has always been too epic in whatever the masked man has landed his terrifyingly deep voice on. His grasp of the English language is impeccable. His ability to rap as though he is on remote control is quite evident in this as well. News at 20:14 is not read in a Frank Walusimbi’s tone, or in a Maurice Mugisha’s tailored razor-sharp coat, but rather in a profound voice from an unknown lad who has remained a mystery for this long while. This is a good one!
