The two-year lockdown on concerts, bars, disco halls, performing artists, beaches, and other entertainment gatherings in Uganda has been maintained for more months.
During the Presidential address on Covid-19 related issues on Wednesday evening, H.E Y.K Tibuhabura Museveni revealed that places of such caliber are to remain closed because they gather large numbers of people that are hard to control.
However, President Museveni noted that these will be considered for reopening after at least the 4.8Million priority population has been vaccinated.
“These tend to congregate large numbers and are difficult to control. With the level of vaccination still low, I direct that these remain closed until at least the 4.8 million priority population is vaccinated,” President Museveni said.
Despite the longtime escalating pressure from the bar owners and managers around the country, President Museveni said that bars are considered as high-risk areas capable of spreading Covid-19.
This is because most people in bars are always unsober hence expected not to adhere to any Standard of Operation Procedures.
“Bars are a high-risk area where individuals have no sobriety to observe the SOPs. They will be considered for re-opening when the 4.8 million priority population is vaccinated,” he added.
Concerts and bars are among the sectors that were locked down in March 2020 following the Covid-19 global breakout.
Despite the opening up of other sectors of the economy, bars and concerts have been persisted under lockdown.
