Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine earned himself the top prize at the International Documentary Association [IDA] Awards in an event that was held virtually.
The film/documentary directed by Moses Bwayo and Christopher Sharp was named Best Feature Documentary, winning over nine other Oscar-contending documentaries.
‘Bobi Wine: The People’s President’ tells the story of how the singer turned politician went against President Museveni’s regime in 2021 general elections.
“The awareness of this film has brought to world audiences has arguably kept Bobi Wine alive and out of prison for now,” Bwayo commented in his acceptance speech. “This film is a testament to the courage and determination of Bobi Wine, his wife, Barbie, and the people of Uganda, and all those brave opposition leaders of the world. This recognition is immensely gratifying.”
‘Bobi Wine: The People’s President’ premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and has gone on to win prizes at Hamptons International Film Festival, and Independent Film Festival of Boston. It is nominated in three competitive categories at next month’s Cinema Eye Honors.
Bobi Wine has been traveling the last months in different countries and the most recent being the UK to premiere his documentary and speak about his political journey thus far.
