If you are reading this, you probably don’t remember the last time you had soda in a glass bottle. And if you are still reading this, you probably don’t see yourself drinking from a glass bottle in the nearby future. And that’s the story for many Soft drinks’ manufacturers in the country. It is a revolution that started with Riham Cola. When Riham came into the Ugandan market, it was branded too close to Coca Cola that a scuffle ensued between the Coca Cola (the market leader then), and Riham. It would result into the creation of Coke Mini. “Coke…

As the norm is, Bebe Cool, the leader of Uganda’s silent majority releases his annual list of Uganda’s best music artistes. This time round, it was all clear that he stood no chance to be on his list. The crafty Bebe Cool started off the list with all the right names, and the right songs. One of those was Pallaso whom he now described as a friend, and brother. He mentioned Winnie Nwagi described as the female version of Bebe Cool. I had an amazing 3 hour conversation about African Oral History. It is a conversation where our brains rubbed off so well with each other. If brains had sex, my brain was having an intellectual make-up with hers. Anyway, back to Oral History. One of the things I told her was that African societies failed to scale because they could write. The invention of writing made it possible to scale messages. Writing brought consistency, writing killed differentiation. That all of a sudden, millions of people could read the same thing. I also told her that writing encouraged dictatorships to thrive.…

A number of Ugandans are living in denial of COVID-19. Partly because the government mishandled the fight against Covid-19. I wrote about how the citizens withdrew their trust. Unfortunately this has also caused second-order effects. Covid-19 denialism is what’s currently killing most Ugandans. In the past few weeks, I have had friends lose relatives to COVID-19. I have had friends who have successfully beaten Covid-19, some coming too close to death. It is only after Covid-19 hits nearby that Ugandans begin to confess; “Covid is real.” Covid has always been real. Denialism is manifested in people refusing to take tests.…

I wanted to climb to the peak of Mountain Rwenzori like yesterday. It was a tale of passion, curiosity, anxiety, ignorance, all these things mixing into one great combination. I often see Ugandans speak of the high costs of road construction in Uganda and I shudder. The conversation of the ‘elites’ is rarely any different from that of my friends with zero formal education, casting their fishing nets in the village of Mityana. As such, I have decided that once every week, I will take out time just to raise the quality of debate in different areas. Today, I will concern myself with the actual reasons that influence the costs of road infrastructure in Uganda. Contrary to popular opinion, corruption plays very little into the cost of a road…

15 years ago, most mechanical engineers in Uganda started their journey in Kisenyi. It is Kisenyi that went on to define the local industrialization in Uganda.
