Miley Cyrus, the pop star who caused a sensation with her raunchy performance at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, was named best artist of 2013 by the cable TV network on Tuesday. MTV said the singer dominated the music charts and the headlines with the release of her album “Bangerz,” her jaw-dropping performances at awards shows and her hosting stint on the television sketch show “Saturday Night Live.” “She is the third artist to receive the distinction of being named MTV’s Best Artist of the Year with past honorees including Katy Perry (2012) and One Direction (2011),” MTV said…

Google celebrated its 15th anniversary this year, but showed none of the creeping complacency that have derailed other dominant tech companies. For the search giant, 2013 was simply another year during which it solidified its place in the center of just about every area of the Internet economy. Of the four horsemen of the Internet age along with Apple, Facebook and Amazon (Samsung is angling to be No. 5), Google is the only one to compete in all areas including hardware, social networking, retail, TV and, of course, search. Though it performs better in some areas versus others (ahem, Google…

Google is using its Google+ social network to create ads but not run them, the company announced on Monday. The “+Post” ads will run on Google Display Network, which includes 2 million sites. The ads look just like Google Plus posts but appear outside the network. For example, if you’re in the market for a minivan, you might see a Toyota ad pop up on AutoTrader or another car enthusiast site. In that sense, the units behave much like Facebook’s promoted posts. The Google+ ads don’t include recommendations, though — only public posts from Google+ users. A comment from someone in one of your circle…

A fake story posted on satirical website The Daily Currant resulted in Kanye West setting the record straight about his thoughts on Nelson Mandela Monday (Dec. 9). The site claimed West called himself “the next Nelson Mandela” in an interview with Chicago radio station WGCI, prompting backlash from readers. “The #SamsungTwitterParty is back! Get ready to party the night away come 19th December at Zone 7 with fellow tweeps. Entrance is 15,000shs. Call 0775439894 for details. Great music and drinks.” West’s recent rants, both on stage and in radio interviews promoting his Yeezus tour, may have helped make the alleged quotes believable to some. The story was shared on…

Samsung smartphones play second fiddle to the iPhone in the U.S., but globally, the Korean company’s handsets are easily the most popular. One disgruntled customer, however, has posted a damaging online video that could put a dent in Samsung’s reputation. On Dec. 2, Canadian resident Richard Wygand posted a YouTube video in which he claimed that his Galaxy S4 was dangerously defective. “I just plugged it in to charge it,” Wygand says in the video. “Went to sleep, woke up to smoke and a little bit of burning.” Wygand then shows off his S4’s damaged power plug, which appears to be severely burned and warped. Later…

It looks like Barack Obama has taken a few pointers from Sasha and Malia on his selfie game. The president was caught snapping a photo with British Prime Minister David Cameron and Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning Schmidt during the memorial service for Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Tuesday. “The #SamsungTwitterParty is back! Get ready to party the night away come 19th December at Zone 7 with fellow tweeps. Entrance is 15,000shs. Call 0775439894 for details. Great music and drinks.” It’s unclear which of the three is the true selfie instigator, but one thing’s for sure: Michelle Obama is not impressed. Judging by that…

Located on the ground floor of the grand impressive vintage-architecture-designed Village Mall, Kentucky Fried Chicken, which opened its Ugandan wing yesterday, is tucked in the extreme Eastern side. An internationally renowned brand; the newly opened wing attests to that. The entrance directly faces the counter, the ultimate reason of visiting a restaurant. I went as part of the press team to cover its opening so the counter was not my concern as my presence came with free chicken at the end of the day. “The #SamsungTwitterParty is back! Get ready to party the night away come 19th December at Zone…
