Ladies, we don’t expect our boyfriend to pick and drop us everywhere, do we? We buy him presents as much as he does, and we split the bill when we go out. But when it comes to making the first move, we still shy away. The prospect of asking out a guy seems horrifying, and most of us are clueless about how to go about it. Granted, we hardly ever need to do it, but hey … it’s a new skill set to add to our repetoire.
1. Keep it casual
Imagine if a guy you don’t even know all that well yet, comes up to you and tells you that he can’t stop thinking about you. You would flip out, right? The same goes for a guy. So, keep just how much you obsess about the way he smiles, or how his cologne smells, for another day. Keep it simple, and ask him if he’d like to grab a drink or a cup of coffee sometime. He will, in all likelihood, say yes. But that drink doesn’t necessarily qualify as a date. There’s more work to do…
2. Warm him up with hints
This is when you put your flirting skills to the test. Here’s a list of things to keep in mind when you’re “dropping hints”.
• Give him a compliment. Safe things to praise are: his shirt, his hair, his shoes, his sense of humour and his wit. Things you don’t want to praise: his body parts (Imagine this: “I like your biceps.” *Strokes gently* *Creepy!*).
• Use your body language wisely. Lean in, but not so much that he can see everything down your blouse. Don’t cross your arms, but don’t fling them around his neck either.
• Listen to him! One of the best ways you can let a guy know that you’re interested in him is by taking interest in things he does and talks about. So, if he’s talking about sports, don’t act bored even if you don’t have a clue about what he’s saying. Asking him questions is a good strategy.
• For God’s sake, laugh at his jokes! But not hysterical, obviously fake laughter. You don’t want to sound crazy.
3. Say it out loud!
So, you’ve hinted that you like him. Maybe he picked up on it, or maybe not. Either way, you should make it clear. Treat it as something you just need to let him know. He doesn’t have to reciprocate, or do something about it. You like him, and you want to say it to him. So just say the words, “I like you”. That’s all. When you say it out loud, you’ve established that this is more than just a casual drink.
4. And now, you do the deed…
You hung out with him and had a great time. You’ve let him know that you’re interested in more than just hanging out. Now it’s time to tell him that you’d love to do this again, and ask him where (and when) he’d like to go. If he says he’ll “let you know”, he’s probably not all that interested. But if he suggests a place, or asks what you’d like to do, your mission’s accomplished. Pick one of these, and fix a date. A match screening at a sports bar, bowling, a movie and dinner, a concert? All of these work. Now go buy yourself a dress!
