Kampala, Uganda, 27th September 2013 – Airtel Uganda today held a special lunch ceremony at Wandegeya Mosque for members of the Muslim community in preparation for the Haj pilgrimage.
For many Muslims the Haj is considered the greatest journey they will undertake in their lifetimes. The actual Hajj spans five days. This year Haj rites are scheduled to be performed in Mecca and Medina between October the 13th and 18th, subject to the sighting of the moon.
Speaking at the lunch, Airtel Managing Director, Mr. VG Somasekhar thanked the Muslim community for continuously supporting Airtel initiatives like Airtel money and wished them a successful pilgrimage. “Airtel is proud of its special relationship with the Muslim community here in Uganda and we would like to continue our support to them through the special products we have on offer during important times of the Islamic calendar like Ramadan and the Haj. As the time for the pilgrimage comes we have created a platform that will enable all the Muslims across the country stay in touch with friends and family through our affordable international rates. We hope all who travel a successful and blessed journey we wish them the best on their pilgrimage.”
The pilgrims have been given roaming rates as low as 300/= per minute and for pilgrims on the Airtel and Warid networks they will be charged a flat rate of 6/= per second.
At the event, one of the pilgrims won a Huawei Ascend W1 phone to his delight. This phone was handed over by the Huawei Terminal Director Mr. Jonny Wenqiang.
The lunch hosted by Airtel provided the Muslim guests present with information on the promotional roaming rates as well as the products on offer from Airtel like data services to help them keep in touch with their families and loved ones during the pilgrimage period.

In his remarks to the Muslim community gathered at the Wandegeya Mosque for the Lunch, the Guest of Honor Prince Kassim Nakibingye urged Airtel to continue to dialogue with the Muslim community which has been a loyal supporter of Airtel. He further thanked the company for recognizing and supporting the Muslim community with special promotions and events like the lunch before closing proceedings with a prayer.
