An idea birthed from a coffee shop and engineered by David Ogutu and Colin Asiimwe, KoiKoiUg has picked up rapidly. KoiKoiUg is a 10-week campaign all out to document Uganda through pictures. Koi Koi is a Luganda word that means stories and tales. And, in this context, the campaign is about telling Ugandan stories through pictures.

Over the weekend (which was week three of the campaign) saw a couple of social media enthusiasts and photographers take a road trip to Jinja to carry on with the cause. This group consisted of: Sanyu FM’s David Ogutu, Colin Asiimwe, Shalom Kalule, New Vision’s Nimusiima Edward, URN’s Qatahar Raymond, Edna Ninsiima, Joanne Nvannungi, Joel Jemba, photographer Andrew Pacutho, Art Director Mosha Pipes (Kreativ Adikt), Blu Flamingo’s Liz, et al.

In what they termed #JinjaInstaMeet, the group set off for Jinja, known as the Stone Town, at about 8am, Saturday morning. They turned the nose of their cars and headed East. First stop was Namawojjolo to buy a few bites that are a common staple with travellers.

Next stop was Sezibwa Falls. The falls, which harbor an impressive history, offered quite an amazing view. The group later drove to both the sugarcane and tea plantations before heading to Jinja town.

In Jinja, they trekked around the old town, like explorers, lugging cameras and smartphones, taking random pictures as locals looked on admiringly. They shot everything at sight; Jinja Market, people, roadside merchandise, old buildings with good architecture, et al.

As evening crept in, the group drove to the popular The Bourbon at the lip of River Nile where they later jumped in a boat and cruised around to the Source of Nile. The 45-minute voyage was an exciting one, offering stunning views of the sunset from a faraway distance, tattered and old boats left to rot absentmindedly in the water, fishermen in their leaking canoes sailing confidently in the longest river in the world, many more. It was a memorable experience. All pictures were later posted on different social media platforms with a hashtag – #JinjaInstaMeet.
