Flavia Tumusiime continues to share inspiring stories from her life and career in the “30 days of Flavia Tumusiime” series. On day 24, she posted:
“Every interview I do, someone asks me, how do you do it? There seems to be a lot on your plate and I wonder how you balance it. Some even suggest I rest because sometimes the body can only take so much. I agree, because many times I wake up after 3 hours sleep and I want to give up.
In 2012, my career was soaring, I was doing major productions in South Africa and working with some of the best TV producers on the continent. Then I had to do Big Brother, I remember that week was terrible, I had about 6 hours collectively of sleep all week, I had to work here at home long hours and fly for rehearsals before the live show.
The next morning after Big Brother aired, I had to be on set filming for Chanel O at 6 am, I was 10 mins late and walked on set only to find I was the last person to arrive. The director on set took me aside and asked me if I was happy with my life, I said yes. She told me, everyone on this set is replaceable and none of us has the privilege of coming late and wasting time and money, she told me, am sure you once prayed for all these opportunities but you forgot to pray for the strength and resilience that comes with such a blessing, toughen up and realize that you either go big or go home.
I was confused because back here at home in Uganda, if you are 10 or so mins late, I don’t think you would be given such a mouthful from your boss, we get it easy sometimes and maybe end up lazy sometimes in mind too.
I had to learn from that moment that maybe that is the hard work I have to put in, work with no complaints and make sure I did my best when I still have that chance and not pile excuses for every mistake. Many of us want success but we don’t really want the hard work and sacrifice that comes with it.”
