Ugandans are the saddest people in Africa – Poll

Kenyans are the second happiest people in Africa and position 33 worldwide, according to the Gallup Positive Experience Index.

The happiness index recorded that most interviewees had smiled or laughed, experienced enjoyment and rest and felt treated with respect.

Half of the Kenyans studied had learned or done something interesting the day before the interview.

Rwanda ranked the happiest in Africa at position 15 out of 143, followed by Nigeria, South Africa and Namibia respectively.

Worldwide, Paraguay took top slot followed by Colombia, with position three to ten also taken by Latin American countries.

The lowest positive emotions were recorded in the Middle East and North Africa region.

Countries with the most unhappy people were Sudan, Tunisia and Turkey.

Tanzanians and Ugandans were described as sad, while South Sudan, Ukraine and Liberia appeared in the bottom ten countries.

The findings measured and quantified characteristics such as respect, laughing, smiling and learning or doing something interesting.

The study was conducted through telephone or face-to-face contact and covered about 1,000 respondents aged 15 and older in each of the 143 countries sampled.

The results which were released to coincide with the United Nations third annual International Day of Happiness.
