ARSENE WENGER has slammed Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard for telling Luis Suarez that he was too good to join Arsenal.
Wenger tried to sign Suarez from Liverpool last summer with a bid of £40m plus one pound but the Uruguyan stayed at Anfield.
The Arsenal manager had a blunt message for Gerrard yesterday.
“You’re never too good for Arsenal and Steven Gerrard knows that,” he said.
“He asked him to stay because he wanted Suarez to play with him and have a chance to win the Premier League. But it didn’t happen, and anyway, Suarez left.”
Suarez, 27, completed a £75million move to Barcelona last month which was where Gerrard predicted he would go.
Gerrard revealed this week that he said: “Last summer, when Luis was out in the cold and training on his own, I told him ‘Don’t go to Arsenal’.
“With all due respect to them, I told him he was too good for Arsenal.
“Luis’ dream, from the first day he came to us, was to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona.”
Suarez is banned from all football for four months after biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini during a World Cup group game and will have his appeal against the ban heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport next Friday, with a decision expected the following week.
Barcelona are also asking CAS to allow Suarez to train with his team-mates for the duration of any ban – under the FIFA ban he is not permitted even to enter a training ground.
